Why are the elite having problems accepting the results of the June 2016 referendum?

This is the question the redoubtable  Gisela Stuart posed. If you go on Google.you will find the following list of our referendum results since 1973 as listed  by the electoral commission.

https://www.parliament.uk/get-involved/elections/referendums-held-in-the-uk/

I quote below from this report

Previous referendums in the UK

  • 8 March 1973: Northern Ireland  – Northern Ireland sovereignty referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom or join the Republic of Ireland (yes to remaining part of the UK)
  • 5 June 1975: UK – Membership of the European Community referendum on whether the UK should stay in the European Community (yes)
  • 1 March 1979: Scotland – Scottish devolution referendum on whether there should be a Scottish Assembly (40 per cent of the electorate had to vote yes in the referendum, although a small majority voted yes this was short of the 40 per cent threshold required to enact devolution)
  • 1 March 1979: Wales – Welsh devolution referendum on whether there should be a Welsh Assembly (no)
  • 11 September 1997: Scotland – Scottish devolution referendums on whether there should be a Scottish Parliament and whether the Scottish Parliament should have tax varying powers (both referendums received a yes vote)
  • 18 September 1997: Wales – Welsh devolution referendum on whether there should be a National Assembly for Wales (yes)
  • 7 May 1998: London – Greater London Authority referendum on whether there should be a Mayor of London and Greater London Authority (yes)
  • 22 May 1998: Northern Ireland – Northern Ireland Belfast Agreement referendum on the Good Friday Agreement (yes)
  • 3 March 2011: Wales - Welsh devolution referendum on whether the National Assembly for Wales should gain the power to legislate on a wider range of matters (yes)
  • 5 May 2011: UK – referendum on whether to change the voting system for electing MPs to the House of Commons from first past the post to the alternative vote (no, first past the post will continue to be used to elect MPs to the House of Commons)
  • 18 September 2014: Scotland – referendum on whether Scotland should become an independent country (no, the electorate voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent in favour of Scotland remaining within the UK.
The 1975 one came shortly after Parliament had voted us in and was anyway well and truely fixed by Harold Wilson so we stayed in . Cameron never had Wilson's brains and  his pathetic attempts to fix the 2016 referendum failed abysmally followed by his ignominious retreat.. What would his fellow Old  Etonian Wellington have made of his cack handed Bullingdon club effort?

More interesting  and still relevant to us today is how Heath got the second reading of the ECA
taking us into the Common Market.

On 17 February 1972, the House of Commons voted narrowly by 309-301 in favour of the Bill at its second reading, after three days of intense debate.

Now that was a narrow result! but there were no calls then for a peoples vote. Heath had repeatedly dismissed such referendum calls in the run up to 17th Feb vote..

Michael Crick tweeted on 25th Oct

If the Government only gets Withdrawal Deal through Commons with some Labour votes and abstentions, there’s a nice twist. Heath Govt only got 2nd reading vote on Oct 1971 of act to join EEC with 69 Lab votes & 29 Lab abstentions

May is obviously trying to repeat Heath''s trick. Heath was helped by crypto metropolitan elite LibDems Jenkins and Williams  while May now has Chuka and his chums also of the London elite.

So why no previous referendum problems? Other than the London mayor vote which clearly benefited the London elite's bank balances the other votes were in  places the elite had no financial interest in, Wales, NI and Scotland

Nigel Spearing ( Labour) was the last to speak against. He was a remarkable MP and a Christian gentleman who attended our CIB committee meetings, cycling through the London traffic until an age when most people would be staying at home. He loved Parliament as an institution and was generous with his time in helping us to understand its procedures and quirks. If ever a kindly ghost is spotted in the House with bicycle clips, it will be Nigel. Perhaps he will turn up when they definitely take us out. He chaired the European Committee for many years and his impartiality was such that nobody could have guessed his strong views.

He was able to give a video account of his experiences and views which is linked to my recollection of the Seventies " Edward Spalton the Miller's Tale Episode 4" which can be Googled. At this time of this recording, he knew his mind was going but he was crystal clear for this. He told us to tell him when he was too confused to cope with meetings but, of course, we never did. As one of my colleagues said " Nigel's family" .

Heath, of course, lied as usual when he said he would not take us into the EU without the full-hearted consent of the British people. But the manipulation of public opinion had been very thorough with the Foreign Office telling the BBC every day how to report things.

Edward Spalton said...

I should also add David Stoddart ( Labour) now Lord Stoddart of Swindon ( independent Labour) who is still taking a keen interest in the matter of our independence. He was Chairman of CIB for 23 years and a very hard act to follow- an unfailing source of encouragement, wisdom and advice.

Because our elite are natural Europhiles only seeing the good in the EU and have little to no time for the views and opinions of the ordinary man and woman in the street.

This is why we need the reforms to our governance as demanded by The Harrogate Agenda.

Eric Edmond said...

Again Major Warry shows he has never dealt with the higher echelons of our politicised civil service. Same goes for our armed forces. They look out for their own financial interests and own futures. Cynicism rules OK. Gongs all round. Make mine a big one and my retiral job a well paid sinecure. The nearer to the top the more moral corruption there is. The good honest joes are the bottom.

Esther Rantzen used to have a talking dog on her TV show but it could only say one word, Sausages. The Major's word is Harrogate

Niall Warry said...

I hope you feel better after that outpouring of utter tosh!

Eric Edmond said...

No facts from the Major just bs

Niall Warry said...

Coming back to your post at 02:13 I do understand the 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine' mentality of the civil service and armed forces - so I actually agree with you. I'm therefore not clear why you immediately sought to denigrate me??

Then to your last post at 14:41 I have given plenty of facts over the months on here and as you know support the Efta/EEA option as the only workable interim solution.

You say you like Boles and support Cox but have as yet NOT explained what Cox's plan actually is??

It would be nice if instead of immediately criticising me you actually dealt with the issues and started by explaining what plan you think will maintain our frictionless trade and much more besides, like road transport, aviation etc, worth at least £270 billion a year to our economy?

Eric Edmond said...

My plan always has been is to employ honest competent lucky people. Cox is that.

Niall Warry said...

Well Eric that is indeed a good start and clearly your admiration for Cox is fairly new as I'm not familiar with him.

So I'll have to take your word for him being honest, competent and lucky but I do think all those things will not be enough with only five months to go so I'd hope you could explain what his plan is?

Finally of course, even if he has a winnerable plan, and I'll hold judgement until I see what it is, he is not involved in the negotiations so he cannot much from the sidelines?

So Eric further clarification would be appreciated.

Stephen Harness said...

Epic piece of work. Mr Cox would make an excellent leader.
